Historical Background
Gaius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus became emperor in AD 251 following the death of Emperor Decius during the disastrous Roman defeat at the Battle of Abrittus. Gallus initially ruled alongside Hostilian, the son of Decius, before Hostilian died later that year.
Gallus’ reign was dominated by serious challenges facing the empire. Rome faced renewed pressure along its frontiers, while internal political instability continued to threaten imperial authority. A devastating epidemic, commonly associated with the Cyprian Plague, also affected the population of the empire during this period.
In AD 252, the Persian king Shapur I launched a major invasion of the eastern Roman provinces, capturing important cities and placing additional pressure on the empire.
Gallus’ short reign ultimately ended in AD 253 when his own troops supported the rival commander Aemilian, who had won a military victory against the Goths. Gallus and his son and co-emperor Volusian were killed by their soldiers near Interamna.
The Antoninianus
The antoninianus was introduced during the reign of Caracalla in the early 3rd century and became increasingly important as Rome faced mounting financial pressures. Although originally intended to contain approximately two denarii worth of silver, its precious-metal content declined substantially during the 3rd century.
By the time of Trebonianus Gallus, many antoniniani were composed of billon or base metal with a thin silvering, reflecting the continuing debasement of Roman coinage during the Crisis of the Third Century.
The radiate crown worn by the emperor was an important visual feature of the denomination and helped distinguish the antoninianus from the traditional denarius.
