Description
This Roman Imperial Denarius of Lucius Verus, struck at the Rome Mint in AD 166, graded at EF-45, comes from the reign of one of Rome’s most distinctive emperors of the 2nd century. Lucius Verus ruled jointly with his adoptive brother Marcus Aurelius, forming one of the earliest examples of two emperors sharing supreme authority over the Roman Empire.
The coin dates to a particularly significant period in Lucius Verus’ reign, following the successful Roman campaigns against the Parthian Empire in the East. The victories of the Roman armies under Verus’ command brought considerable prestige to the imperial administration in Rome.

Historical Background
Lucius Verus became emperor in AD 161, succeeding Antoninus Pius alongside Marcus Aurelius. Although Marcus Aurelius was generally the senior partner in the imperial administration, Lucius Verus played an important role in Rome’s military affairs.
Much of his reign was dominated by conflict with Parthia. Roman forces campaigned successfully in Armenia and Mesopotamia, eventually capturing the important Parthian capital of Ctesiphon in AD 165.
By AD 166, the year this denarius was struck, Roman victories in the East had provided the empire with an important military triumph. The same year also saw the return of Roman armies from the eastern campaigns, bringing with them a devastating epidemic that would become known as the Antonine Plague.
The Denarius
The denarius was the principal silver denomination of Roman coinage for centuries and served as an important medium for both commerce and imperial propaganda. Portraits of the emperor on the obverse allowed his image and authority to circulate throughout the empire, while reverse types communicated military victories, religious themes, and imperial virtues.
