Historical Background

Diocletian came to power in AD 284, becoming emperor during a period of severe political and military instability known as the Crisis of the Third Century. He introduced a new system of government known as the Tetrarchy, dividing imperial responsibilities among multiple rulers in an effort to make the vast empire easier to govern and defend.

Under the Tetrarchic system, Diocletian ruled primarily in the eastern portion of the empire, while his colleague Maximian governed the West. Two junior emperors, known as Caesars, assisted them.

The antoninianus had originally been introduced during the reign of Caracalla in the early 3rd century. By Diocletian’s era, however, the denomination had undergone substantial changes in both its appearance and precious-metal content.

The radiate crown traditionally associated with the antoninianus remained an important feature of the denomination. During the monetary reforms of Diocletian’s reign, new denominations were introduced and the earlier antoninianus gradually disappeared from the Roman monetary system.
