Historical Background
Theodosius I, also known as Theodosius the Great, became emperor in AD 379 following the disastrous Roman defeat at the Battle of Adrianople in AD 378. He was tasked with restoring Roman control and stability in the eastern portion of the empire.
His reign was particularly important for the history of Christianity within the Roman Empire. In AD 380, Theodosius issued the Edict of Thessalonica, which supported Nicene Christianity as the official imperial religion. He subsequently took measures against traditional Roman pagan religious practices and supported the Nicene Church.
Theodosius also played a crucial role in the final decades of a unified Roman Empire. After periods of conflict and negotiation, he became the last emperor to rule both the eastern and western halves of the Roman Empire. Following his death in AD 395, the empire was permanently administered under his two sons, Arcadius in the East and Honorius in the West.
